The TIES Program Package

The TIES Program materials are threefold.

v     The TIES Program Manual is a full description of the program, its history, the suggested steps to introducing and implementing it in your community, including the volunteer recruitment and training process.  Potential obstacles are discussed as well as suggestions on how to effectively work through them. It also contains comprehensive appendices with forms for each step of the process, sample letters of introduction and certificates of appreciation. (printed booklet)

v     The TIES Training Workshop is a PowerPoint presentation of 22 slides which introduces the program and its benefits, discusses developmental disability, diversity, inclusion, language of respect and provides several exercises that illumine the nature and importance of relationships in our lives.  It details volunteer characteristics and responsibilities and is designed to fit into a traditional school period of 45 to 50 minutes. (electronically transmitted)

v     The TIES video is part of the Training Workshop and is extremely helpful in showing the volunteers what the program looks like.  The first question most volunteers ask is, “what exactly will I be doing?” and here a picture is worth a thousand words.  The video presents TIES through the eyes of volunteer, participant and parent  and includes clips from an array of representative activities, including a drumming circle and weight training.  (close captioned and available on VHS or DVD format)

All three are included in the TIES Program Package.

One aspect that deserves celebration is that TIES is for all students; it is an effort to unite children with peers so they can learn with and from each other.  Their learning is enhanced by their diversity. Margo VanHaneghan, Director of Special Education, Brighton Central School District, 1998
