Frustrated mom opens up high school experience for students with developmental disabilities
Promoting Success

How this program takes root and flourishes will naturally vary according to the approach of the school district and community, and the Coordinator’s knowledge and experience. Attention to the following key areas will help establish a solid foundation for the TIES program and the ultimate goal of a strong, inclusive community.

¨      Build knowledge of developmental disabilities

¨      Foster a positive approach to inclusion and diversity

¨      Pair effective, capable volunteers with participants

¨      Support the universal right for every individual to actively participate in his own community

¨      Communicate with all parties to monitor the effectiveness of the support

¨      The spirit of TIES is to enjoy opportunities for fun and growth

TIES essentially organizes a team drawn from resources already in place—home, school, community—to establish universal opportunity and thereby enrich the experience of all students as the chosen name states, Together Including Every Student.

One aspect that deserves celebration is that TIES is for all students; it is an effort to unite children with peers so they can learn with and from each other.  Their learning is enhanced by their diversity. Margo VanHaneghan, Director of Special Education, Brighton Central School District, 1998
